This glossary provides definitions for key terms used in the CooinAPI Indexes API documentation. Understanding these terms will help you navigate and utilize our API more effectively.

A

Adjusted Free Float Supply: The portion of a cryptocurrency's total supply that is considered available for trading in the market, adjusted for various factors such as locked tokens or long-term holdings.

Asset Eligibility: The criteria that a cryptocurrency must meet to be considered for inclusion in a CoinAPI index.

Benchmark: A standard against which the performance of a cryptocurrency or portfolio can be measured.

Blockchain: A distributed ledger technology that underpins most cryptocurrencies.

C

Circulating Supply: The amount of a cryptocurrency that is publicly available and circulating in the market.

Constituent: An individual cryptocurrency that is included in an index.

D

Divisor: A numerical value used to calculate the index level, ensuring that the index remains comparable over time despite changes in constituents or their weights.

Exchange: A platform where cryptocurrencies can be bought, sold, or traded.

Expert Judgment: The application of professional expertise in situations where the index methodology may not provide clear guidance.

Fork: A change to the protocol of a blockchain that can result in two separate chains.

Free Float Market Capitalization: The market value of a cryptocurrency based on its price and adjusted free float supply.

Index Level: The calculated value of an index at a given point in time.

Index Rebalancing: The process of periodically adjusting the constituents or their weights in an index.

Liquidity: The degree to which a cryptocurrency can be quickly bought or sold without causing a significant movement in the price.

Market Capitalization: The total value of a cryptocurrency, calculated by multiplying its price by its circulating supply.

PRIMKT (Principal Market Price) Index: A CoinAPI index that uses the price from the most liquid market for each cryptocurrency pair.

Real-Time Index: An index that is calculated and disseminated continuously throughout the trading day.

Reference Rate: A price for a cryptocurrency that is used as a standard reference point, often calculated using a specific methodology.

T

Total Return Index: An index that accounts for all forms of returns, including price changes and income from staking or other rewards.

V

Volatility: A measure of the rate of fluctuations in the price of a cryptocurrency over time.

VWAP (Volume-Weighted Average Price) Index: A CoinAPI index that calculates the average price of a cryptocurrency weighted by the trading volume over a specific period.

W

Weighting: The proportion of an index that is allocated to each constituent cryptocurrency.
